WORKING, ACTIVITY and FUN EVENTS
SAT 24th SEPTEMBER 2016
TAN (Teste d’Aptitude Naturelle)
JUDGE: PAUL BENNETT
The TAN is a test of the dog’s natural ability. All dogs taking part will be assessed. Dogs who have not passed their TAN in previous years will receive a certificate of attendance and those which, in the assessor’s opinion, gain a pass will receive a Diploma of Merit. The Stan Smith Memorial Trophy for Best TAN on the day will be presented by the Judge.
A special prize of £25, kindly donated by Gill Tully, will be given to the youngest dog/bitch to be awarded the TAN certificate.
In general, the dog is assessed on its natural ability in Hunting and Pointing, and also on its response to its handler’s commands. The dog is sent out to hunt in a field where caged birds have been hidden. Most Brittanys will acknowledge or point the birds, even youngsters which have never been in contact with game. This is a very relaxed and informal assessment of the dog’s ability and is another way to enjoy our chosen breed. It is not a formal test of a trained gundog, merely an assessment of what our Brittanys’ instincts should be! You preferably need to be able to recall your dog. That’s all there is to it!
REEP (Deep Water Retrieve)
The REEP is effectively swimming to collect a dummy and is another indicator of the dog’s naturally ability.
Both the TAN and the REEP are about exploring your dog’s working potential rather than being competitive events.
TAKE PART IN TRAINING, TASTER SESSIONS AND COMPETITIONS
We have a number of other events going on throughout the day. Depending on the number of ‘helpers’ available, as well as the TAN and REEP we hope to run the following:
Obedience – basic obedience classes throughout the day;
Timed Stay – competition with a trophy for the longest stay;
Sprint – which dog can sprint the fastest;
Scurry – Time sprint (or retrieve) over straw bales;
Agility – Taster sessions. Advice available for beginners and improvers from Brittany owners who compete in the sport.
Retrieving – Novice and Advanced
Learn to Swim – for dogs not yet confident in the water
Show Ring Presentation and Handling
Grooming Demonstrations (with your own dog) – Preparing for the show ring.
Regional Team Challenge
While there is a competitive element to some of the activities you do not have to compete to join in. If you are a beginner, just let the steward know and then use the event as a training exercise, advised and guided by the steward.
We will also have the usual raffle and Tombola – all donations welcome
Anyone who is willing to help out on the day should contact Steve Wright (01789 772413).
