Training Day to be held at the Gamegoer Gundog Kennels, Heathfield Lodge, Bletchingdon, Oxford, OX5 3DU (by kind permission of Graham & Karen Watkin)
Commencing 10.00 to 16.30 approx. Fee £10 for members, £12 non-members.
10.15 – 12.30 General Disobedience – Beginners – Steve Wright, Novices – Norma Ansell, (Maurice Cook assisting ‘special needs’)
Covering the principles of obedience – creating willingness and respect, improving response, the dog’s understanding of your commands, developing handling skills. Training in basic heelwork, stays and recall. Advice available on behavioural problems.
There are farm animals on site to test your dog’s steadiness with these.
12.30 – 13.30 Lunch
13.30 – 15.00 TAN preparation (for the Test d’Aptitudes Naturels) at the Brittany Club’s Le Weekend in July. This is the Club’s entry event into any sort of fieldwork with Brittanys and is open to any dog that has not previously won the event. Involves finding caged game in rough grassland and does not require any prior training.
15.00 -16.30 General fieldwork – Steve Wright, Maurice Cook
Hunting for game. How to develop a quartering pattern. A secure rabbit pen is available.
Retrieve. Training the retrieve with dummies and cold game, from puppies onwards. Split retrieves, memory retrieves, etc.
Water. The venue has an extensive and inviting lake.
Steadiness. Nipping problems in the bud. Introduction to gunshot.
13.30 -16.00 Agility & Canicross – Norma Ansell & any volunteer who knows about canicross!
Introducing agility to young dogs and developing response. Coaching for those who are already on their way.
This is an opportunity to find out about competitive sports that are very suitable for the pet Brittany and offer good outlets for their energy.
These will take place at the same time as the Fieldwork and we envisage you moving from one to the other as you wish.
16.00 – 16.30 End of day
Questions and answers. Feedback of future needs.
Please bring everything you need with you, i.e. dog/s, lead & collar, dummy/ies, whistle, waders/wellies, towels, water & drinking bowl. Also bring your own food with extra to share. There is a barbecue on site if anyone wants to cook their own!
Other HPR breeds are very welcome.
DIRECTIONS TO GAMEGOER GUNDOGS
Take the B4027 turn off the A34, 1 mile south of the M40 Junction 9. Head towards Bletchingdon for 100 yds, then turn right to Heathfield Lodge. BCGB signs will direct you from there.
WHOSE TRAINING YOU
Steve Wright has worked Brittanys with hawks for 30 years. He previously trained guide dogs for over 20 years, having competed in obedience prior to this. He has bred 8 generations of his Hawkwise Brittanys and became a Committee Member of the BCGB in 2006 before coming Chairman in 2014. Latterly he has been exploring the world of Field Trials. He works his dog on three local shoots each week and does both beating and “picking up”.
Maurice Cooke is a member of the Kennel Club General Committee and of its Crufts Sub Committee and is an ex member of the Activities Sub Committee and Working Trials Council having competed successfully in this sphere for many years. He, with his partner Norma, have owned and bred Brittanys for 18 years. Maurice is also working on local shoots and competing at Working Tests and Trials.
Norma Ansell is an experienced dog trainer & animal behaviourist, having competed and won Tickets in Obedience. Now concentrates on Working Trials and Agility. Her bitch “Hawkwise Bedouine over Gefni” was the highest graded Brittany ever to compete in the UK and is now the mother of the highest achieving Brittany in this sphere.
