BRITTANY CLUB OF GREAT BRITAIN

For those that don’t know, Le Weekend is the club’s annual get together where members from all over the UK gather to take part in the working and activity day and the championship show. The weekend is friendly and informal. You can attend either (or both) days and join in and take part in as much or as little as you want to. There are trophies and prizes up for grabs on both days and the chance to meet other like-minded Brittany enthusiasts.
Dogs do not have to be KC registered to take part in the activity day competitions and events – in fact they don’t have to be Brittanys – other HPR breeds owned by members are welcome to take part in Le Weekend activity day.
If you were at Le Weekend last year, we hope to welcome you back. If you have not attended before, why not make this year the first time.

On-site accommodation is available There are single rooms only and these are priced at £37.50 per person. Rooms are on two levels and have easy access to toilets and showers. There is also a well-equipped kitchen where guests can prepare their own drinks or snacks. Accommodation is available on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Please book in plenty of time using the enclosed booking form. Our dogs are also welcome but must be kept under control. No dogs are permitted in rooms. Bedding and towels will be provided.
Unfortunately there is no space for caravans or motor homes, but there are several sites fairly close by. Please make own bookings:
> Westgate House CL – Grass EHU, £14 pr nt.
> Beechcroft CL – Grass EHU.
> Lakeside Touring Caravan Park, Thorney, Newark, has a dog exercise field, £23 pr nt, £1 pr nt per dog.
> Langdale Lakes Caravan Park, dog walk on site, £25pr nt (max 2 dogs).
> Carriers Farm, dog walk on site, grass EHU, £15 pr nt.
> There are numerous other places in the area but these are ones that confirmed (at the time) that they had vacancies and would accept dogs and are relatively close to Riseholme (Thorney is a bit further but the availability of dog exercise area may make up for this).
New for 2019!
This year we will have a marquee on site at Riseholme that will be the central point of the weekend. It will provide an information point during the weekend, the location for our Championship Show on Saturday 13th July, the meeting point for other activities during the weekend and will be the venue for our Saturday evening Hog Roast.
Another first for 2019 will be our Hog Roast on the Saturday evening. This will be held in the Marquee. The cost will be £25 per person including desert and must be booked in advance. No drinks are included, so please bring along your own drinks. The menu for the Hog Roast is attached.
We hope many members will wish to attend this special evening to make the whole weekend an “all round enjoyable” event in the Brittany Club Calendar.
The cafeteria at Riseholme provides snacks and full meals at very reasonable prices and will be open during the weekend at the following times:
Friday Evening Meal 5.00 – 7.00pm
Saturday Breakfast 8.00 – 10.00am
Saturday Lunch 12.00-2.00pm
Sunday Breakfast 8.00- 10.00am
Sunday Lunch 12.00- 2.00pm
All meals purchased at the cafeteria are payable on site
There will be no Bar facilities but we can bring our own drinks.
WORKING AND ACTIVITIES DAY

Meet in the Marquee for information on all the day’s events and for introductions and instructions for the day. Each participant will receive a timetable and map of the area on registration – enlarged copies of these will also be at strategic points.
NATURAL APTITUDE ASSESSMENT (TAN Test des Aptitudes Naturels)
Your dog (6 months +) needs no previous training and is assessed on its natural ability in Hunting and Pointing, and on its response to its handler. It takes place in a secure field where caged birds have been hidden. The Judge wants to see it hunt the area thoroughly, use the wind instinctively and its reaction to finding game. It is a relaxed and informal assessment of your dog’s working potential.
Dogs who have not previously passed their TAN will receive a certificate of attendance and a critique. Those gaining a pass, in the assessor’s opinion, will receive a Diploma of Merit. The Stan Smith Memorial Trophy will be awarded for Best TAN participant on the day. NB Former winners are excluded from competing.
An afternoon training session is designed to help you to understand use of the wind and more about teaching your dog how to quarter ground thoroughly, etc.
Deep water retrieve Dogs are asked to retrieve a canvas dummy from water requiring them to swim. Achieving this earns your dog a Diploma of Merit. More experienced dogs can try a higher degree of difficulty, where the dog is sent across a wider expanse of water for an unseen dummy. Bring dog (and human) towels.
This is the third element of the HPR’s skills. Introductory training sessions will be held throughout the morning – dogs can retrieve favourite toys or canvas dummies. In the afternoon there will be two competitions, for Novice and Advanced dogs, where different types of retrieves are attempted – of increasing complexity. You will see exercises to teach your dog in preparation for next year’s Le Weekend!
A dog that retrieves can be exercised in a relatively small area, so it is a boon to urban owners without access to open countryside.
A relatively new sport where owners and dogs compete as a team – running trails over differing distances according to your ambition and fitness! Dogs wear a harness and are attached to you by a bungee line fastened to your belt. This is a safe and enjoyable way of exercising and building a good rapport with your dog. Advice will be available on the day.
An excellent outlet for energy and high intensity exercise that encourages responsiveness. A selection of jumps, tunnels, etc. will be available for practice throughout the day, with experienced handlers on hand to coach you and your dog. Ask them about this popular sport.
Sessions in both morning and afternoon will deal with behavioural problems, basic obedience, and your relationship with your Brittany. Experienced Canine Behaviourists will be on hand to help with individual problems.
Covers heelwork, recall and staying, etc. Advice on developing a deeper interest through Kennel Club Good Citizen Scheme and Obedience Clubs

KC POINTS OF THE DOG ASSESSMENT

As a child I grew up with dogs at home and I began showing in 1969 after my parents bought me an Irish Setter. Whilst still at school I started working for a well known Irish and English Setter kennel which carried the Margretwoods and Renmark affixes and was taught all aspects of the show dog.
It was during this time I met my future husband Paul who was then also showing English Setters. We took a step back from the show world whilst raising our family but when rekindling our interest in showing it was the Brittany that had caught our eye. After initial research, viewing from the ringside and visiting kennels we purchased our first Brittany in 1997 and the Bonapartist kennel was founded shortly after.
To date we have owned a total of fourteen Brittanys that have lived indoors with us. Sadly, some of the oldies are no longer with us but the line continues with our current five month old puppy. I have bred six litters which have produced a number of show champions which I am extremely proud of.
I am so looking forward to this special day and feel honoured to have been elected to judge.
Memorial Classes Judge: Jean Byrne (ENRYB)
The ENRYB affix was registered in 1979 when I first got involved with Gundogs and began showing Irish Setters which I did with some success.
In 1990 I moved into the HPR breeds with Weimaraners and in 2014 acquired my first Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla. I currently show and compete in working events with both my Weimaraners and HWVs.
I began my judging career in 1989 and have continued to judge all gundog breeds at Open show level including the group and BIS on numerous occasions. I currently award CCs in seven gundog breeds :- GWP, GSP, Weimaraner, Irish Setter, Hungarian Vizsla, Pointer and HWV. I have bred numerous Weimaraner Show Champions and in addition have trialled two to Full Champion status.
I actively show my dogs all year round, attending most Championship shows and work them on local shoots throughout the shooting season. I am looking forward to judging the stakes at the Brittany breed club Championship show.
The show will be held in the Marquee this year and will provide shelter and cover whatever weather we experience on the day
